Why I did it

I started this site around August 2000 after searching the web for information after Lena’s tragic death. At the time, there was very little about her on the web, mainly just BBC news items with the odd picture here and there. A friend of mine was just begining to learn about making web sites and was looking for a project to do and so It seemed the obvious answer. I searched through my cupboards and attic and dug out my old newspaper cuttings and anything else I could find. There wasn’t much there really but it was a start. I did have some old audio tapes of Lena’s television series that I’d taped off of the television years before, and we thought it would be good to allow people to hear some of this. We cleaned the recordings up as best we could and encoded them into MP3 files.

The site seemed to take off and judging by the guestbook people seemed pleased that there was somewhere they could find out more about Lena and hear some of her live performances. At the same time as we were doing this, another site dedicated to Lena was started by Paul Fretwell. This was an excellent site but he couldn’t dedicate any more time to it and had to let it go. Since then, a couple of other great sites have come along and are also helping to keep Lena’s memory alive. I haven’t been able to dedicate as much time to this site as I’d like, but I’m hopeful that I will be able to start working on it again soon, so don’t give up on it!

The technical bit

The site’s been re-written using current web standards making it more accessible to various internet devices, as well as making it easier to update. Text can be re-sized now if needed and there is a “printer friendly” style sheet.

The pages need to be shown on a display set to at least 800 by 600 pixels. It will display as intended on current versions of the popular browsers (tested on Windows only) but will look plain to anyone clinging on to version 4 browsers or earlier. If there are any problems, please contact me and I’ll see if it can be fixed.

Built using Paint Shop Pro trial, Notepad and a couple of fingers.
